华林居士者,重庆合州人也。因慕东坡居士、易安居士和幼安居士等名流之名,故附庸风雅,自号华林居士。曾作文《居士杂谈》以自辩,其云：“在下自号华林居士,并非佛教之信徒也,姑妄沾沾清静无为与文人雅士之气息而已。或曰：尔乃世俗小人,怎敢也以居士自许？其与赵老太爷质问阿Q一样：尔等也配姓赵？在下思之,可借用阿Q名言答之：和尚摸得,吾也摸得。别人能称居士,在下何又不能称居士？” 居士曾杜撰格言云：“大千世界,芸芸众生,吾辈之流如沧海一粟,实显渺小。吾虽布衣,非杰出之人,然终不可忘记热爱生活、享受人生之权利。”
